| If only Musso had been blessed with good looks, it might have caught on. But with an obscure badge and (ironically) in the hands of a British designer, it remained an ugly-duckling outsider in the UK's style- and status-conscious 4x4 stakes. If you can live with the looks, it's a bargain. There's lots of room inside with space to spare for luggage. Equipment levels are good, with standard air con, four electric windows, ABS and traction control. Mercedes-licenced engines are reliable, workmanlike and reasonably refined. The 2.9 TDi gives 30mpg, has lots of torque at low revs (good for towing) but is unhurried in its responses. There's selectable four-wheel drive for when the going gets tough, though Musso's off-road abilities are bettered by Discovery and Shogun. Never less than safe and assured on-road, it's fairly nimble for its size but suffers from an inconsistent ride and some body roll. |
